For five years Mary Kay has operated Smithton Radio, formally under the call sign VMR704 now VKT750, which is located at an ideal spot overlooking Bass Strait. In that time she has taken over eight and a half thousand calls, (see the latest Statistics)provided assistance to Tasmania Police on numerous occasions, and assisted in many rescues. Having noted the areas off the north west coast of Tasmania where marine VHF coverage was non-existent, Mary prepared a submission to MAST, and lobbied State Government departments, seeking the establishment of a VHF marine repeater on Three Hummock Island. In 2003 Mary was successful in securing a recreational boating funding of $32,000 for the establishment of the Three Hummock Island VHF repeater which MAST completed in 2005. Mary has to be congratulated on the time and effort that she put into gathering the information that she provided in her submissions. The Three Hummock Island VHF Repeater is the eighth in the series of repeaters established around the coast of Tasmania which provide a vital safety coverage for both professional fishing boats and pleasure craft. Morning and evening weather forecasts and warnings are issued by Smithton Radio, on both HF and VHF, covering Bass Strait, including Flinders and King Islands. Mary enjoys providing this vital safety service to those on the waters of Bass Strait, and Tasmania's west coast, and encourages both fishing boats and pleasure craft to radio regular position reports. |
